The “Celestial Disc” Sling Bag: A Simple, Geometric Sewing Project

Hello, sewing enthusiasts! Are you looking for a stylish, quick project that tackles unique geometric shapes with minimal fuss? I’m excited to share the pattern for the Celestial Disc Sling Bag—a perfectly round bag that combines a distinctive circular silhouette with a surprisingly simple construction process.

Inspired by a fantastic video that shows the easiest way to sew a round bag, this pattern uses only three main pattern pieces: a circular front, a rectangular body/gusset strip, and a strap. It’s a great way to use up those larger fabric scraps and create a fun, everyday bag that stands out. Whether you make it in a bold print or a solid color, this bag is a guaranteed head-turner!

Grab your fabric, your sewing machine, and let’s get rolling!

Why You’ll Love Making This Bag:

  • Unique Shape: The perfect round design is chic and modern.
  • Easy Construction: Relies on straight-line sewing and one simple curved attachment (the circle).
  • Versatile Sizing: Easily scale the pattern up or down by changing the circle diameter.
  • Practical Design: Fully lined with a zipper top for security and a deep interior.

What You’ll Need:

  • Main Fabric: 1/2 yard of medium-weight canvas, denim, or vinyl (for a structured look).
  • Lining Fabric: 1/2 yard of lightweight cotton or similar lining material.
  • Zipper: 1 zipper, approximately 18–20 inches (45–50 cm) long.
  • Strapping: 1 piece of webbing or strap material, 1 inch wide, and 55–60 inches long (140–150 cm).
  • Tools:
    • Sewing Machine and thread.
    • Fabric Scissors or Rotary Cutter.
    • Pins/Clips.
    • Iron and Ironing Board.
    • Circular Template: A dinner plate, bowl, or compass for drawing the circle.

Measurements & Cutting List

The final bag will have an approximate diameter of 10 inches (25 cm) and a depth of 3 inches (7.5 cm). All measurements include a 1/4-inch (6 mm) seam allowance.

Construction: Building the Round Bag

Part 1: The Zipper Panel

  1. Attach Main Fabric to Zipper: Place one (E) Zipper Strip right-side up. Lay the zipper right-side down along the long edge of the strip. Place one (E) Lining Strip on top, aligning the edges (zipper is sandwiched).
  2. Stitch and Press: Sew along the edge using a zipper foot. Flip the fabric pieces open so the lining and main fabric are facing away from the zipper, and press well.
  3. Repeat: Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the second (E) Main Strip, attaching it to the other side of the zipper.
  4. Complete the Gusset: Take the (C) Main Gusset Strip (33″ long). Pin one end of the zipper panel to one end of the main gusset strip. Sew these ends together to form one long loop of fabric with the zipper integrated at the top. This is now your main Gusset Loop.
  5. Create the Lining Gusset Loop: Repeat step 4 with the (D) Lining Gusset Strip, sewing its ends together to form a seamless loop.

Part 2: Attaching the Strap

  1. Mark Strap Placement: Lay the Gusset Loop flat, finding the zipper center. Measure down from the zipper and mark the side seams where the strap will be attached.
  2. Pin Strap: Insert the ends of the (F) Strap into the side seam markings on the main fabric side of the Gusset Loop. Baste the ends of the strap in place, making sure the strap is not twisted.

Part 3: Attaching the Circles (The Main Body)

  1. Pin the Circle: Take the (A) Main Circle Panel. Find the quarter points of the circle (top, bottom, and sides) and mark them. Do the same for the Gusset Loop (center bottom, top sides of zipper).
  2. Pin and Clip: Align the bottom center mark of the Gusset Loop with the bottom mark of the Circle Panel. Pin these points together. Continue pinning the circular edge to the Gusset Loop edge, easing the curve as you go, and using plenty of clips.
  3. Stitch: Sew the circle to the Gusset Loop slowly and carefully, maintaining your 1/4-inch seam allowance.
  4. Repeat: Repeat steps 1–3 to attach the (B) Lining Circle Panel to the Lining Gusset Loop.

Part 4: Final Assembly

  1. Turn Main Bag: Turn the main bag shell (the one with the strap) right-side out.
  2. Turn Lining: Keep the lining bag shell inside out.
  3. Insert: Open the zipper halfway. Place the main bag shell inside the lining bag shell. The two right sides should now be facing each other, and the raw edges around the open zipper panel should align.
  4. Stitch the Perimeter: Sew the remaining open raw edges around the zipper panel (the perimeter of the opening) with a straight stitch.
  5. Turn Right-Side Out: Reach into the bag through the open zipper and pull the entire bag through the zipper opening. This may take some maneuvering due to the curved shape.
  6. Finishing: Push the lining back inside the main bag. Press the top seam carefully.

Congratulations! You have successfully created the Celestial Disc Sling Bag. This simple, circular design is perfect for exploring the city!
